CONTEXT

The Greater Region covers a territory that is at once German, Belgian, French and Luxembourgish. These border populations, hard hit by the two world wars, share a common history. At the heart of this territory, and to break free from these repeated tragedies, men conceived the idea of a first European construction so that a lasting reconciliation could emerge.

Promoting the Greater Region as a must-visit remembrance destination by showcasing its many memorial sites (museums, battlefields, cemeteries, etc.) through a travelling exhibition. Helping people understand the history of this cross-border territory in relation to the 2 world wars, and explaining the construction of Europe in the aftermath of these two conflicts. The exhibition is one of the many achievements of a vast tourism project promoting a unique destination for the memory of Europe.

The exhibition is divided into two parts. The first area recounts the experiences of our populations through 5 giant photo albums covering the following 5 periods: the years before the First World War, the First World War, the interwar years, the Second World War, and the post-war period with the building of Europe. A second, more “immersive” part uses images and sound to convey a succession of events that marked this shared history. The exhibition aims both to pass on to younger generations a recent past whose themes are still relevant today, and to encourage tourists in the Greater Region to discover its many places of remembrance, sites and museums.

The exhibition was designed, created and produced in partnership with the company Sense for the content and Marcos Vinals Bassols for the scenography. This project is the result of close collaboration between partners from the Greater Region: Belgians (Provinces of Liège and Luxembourg), French (Meuse), Luxembourgers (Eislek) and Germans (Saarland).
