The Queen Elisabeth Competition is a prestigious musical event, followed passionately by a wide audience as well as by the media. It is also one of the few Belgian cultural events to retain a national character with international resonance.
The Queen Elisabeth Competition was first held in 1951. The reach and reputation of the Competition extend far beyond Belgium: candidates come from all over the world, and laureates such as Leon Fleisher, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Jaime Laredo, Gidon Kremer, Mitsuko Uchida, Vadim Repin, Frank Braley, Cristina Gallardo-Domás, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, Baiba Skride, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Sergey Khachatryan, Anna Vinitskaya, Denis Kozhukhin, Boris Giltburg and, more recently, Lukáš Vondráček, Victor Julien-Laferrière, Samuel Hasselhorn, Stella Chen and Jonathan Fournel are among the most renowned musicians in the world. The Queen Elisabeth Competition is organised in four-year cycles, with sessions devoted to piano, cello, voice and violin.
In 2026, the 75th edition of the Competition will be devoted to the cello. 2026 will also be an occasion to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Queen Elisabeth.
